A Tepco (Tokyo Electric Power Company) nuclear power plant in the city was also damaged in the quake. This plant is one of the largest in the world.

From the BBC:

“[Tepco officials] said water containing “a small amount of radioactive material” was released into the sea, but insisted it posed no environmental risk.
[The officials] said the earthquake had been stronger than the reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa power station had been designed to withstand.”

As of July 16, over 10,000 people are displaced due to evacuations.
